Abrazo Boricua Coalition Demands Florida Electeds Step Up Like Other States to Assist Displaced Puerto Ricans

Kara Watkins

The Abrazo Boricua coalition delivered letters to local and state officials demanding the state of Florida, the city of Orlando, and Orange & Osceola counties follow the lead of cities, counties, and states across the country and do their part in helping displaced Puerto Ricans in need.

Specifically, the groups called on Florida elected officials to take the following actions:

  • Release emergency funds and direct them towards housing;

  • Direct resources toward employment assistance and training specifically for displaced adults; and

  • Offer health and mental health services to these affected families.

The letter’s signatories include the Hispanic Federation, Faith in Florida, Organize Florida, SOS by Urbander, and LatinoJustice. The original letters are below:

Gov. Rick Scott

Fl. Senate President Sen. Joe Negron

Fl. Senate Majority Leader Wilton Simpson

Fl. Senate Minority Leader Oscar Braynon

Fl. House Majority Leader Rep. Ray Rodrigues

Fl. House Minority Leader Janet Cruz
